Refuge named ‘Charity of the Year’ at prestigious awards

Refuge has been named Charity of the Year (income over £10m) at the Charity Times Awards, which celebrates best practice in the UK not-for-profit sector. More than 700 people watched Refuge receive the accolade, which was presented at a packed ceremony in central London on Wednesday evening.

The Awards attracted hundreds of entries from across the country, and winners were picked by an expert independent judging panel. The judges were particularly impressed by Refuge’s dedication to its clients, maintained in a very difficult funding environment.

Sandra Horley CBE, chief executive of Refuge said:

“Refuge is thrilled to have received the Charity of the Year award for its outstanding services for women and children escaping domestic violence. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly. They always go the extra mile to support nearly 4,000 women and children on any given day. Thanks to the hard work of all our staff Refuge has increased the number of women and children it supports by 20% year on year. This is phenomenal achievement in an increasingly challenging funding climate.”

Refuge was also shortlisted at the Charity Times Awards in three other categories:

  • Corporate National Partnership of the Year with a Financial Institution, for its ‘My Money, My Life’ campaign in partnership with The Co-operative Bank, which shone a light on financial abuse
  • Corporate National Partnership of the Year with a Retailer, for its ‘Bold is Beautiful’ project in partnership with Benefit Cosmetics
  • Fundraising Team of the Year

Earlier this month Refuge attended the Third Sector Awards:

  • Refuge won the Third Sector Award for Communications Team of the Year
  • Finalist and highly commended in Charity of the Year category
  • Finalist for the Communications Campaign of the Year (The Archers)
