Privacy policy

Refuge is committed to protecting your privacy online and safeguarding any personal details you provide to us whether via this website or through another means. We appreciate that you do not want the personal information you provide us to be distributed indiscriminately.  This page explains how we collect information, what we do with it and what controls you have over it.

Our supporters and contacts are extremely important to us. Without your support Refuge will find it much harder to continue to provide life-changing and life-saving services. It is important that we can communicate with you. We would like to keep you up to date about our work, show the amazing difference your support is making, demonstrate how you are helping us to reach more people experiencing domestic violence and on occasion, approach supporters for further help.

What data do we collect?

In connection with certain services offered through this site we may ask you to submit information such as your name, e-mail address, postal address, telephone number and credit/debit card details. You are under no obligation to provide such information.  However, if you should choose to withhold requested information, we may not be able to offer you certain services.

How is the information used?

Refuge will use the information you provide to us to:

  • Verify any donations you may make
  • Improve the content of our web page
  • Send you any information you have requested, including information about our events and our press releases

We may occasionally send you information about news and events we feel may be of interest to you. This will only come from us (or our agents) and only if you have requested this information. You can ask to receive information from us at the point you provide information to us and you can also tell us later if you do not wish to hear further from us.

We may also analyse the details that you give to us, as well as further information about you that we have obtained from public and private sources to assist us in sending better, tailored communications to you. We want to ensure that we are not overwhelming our supporters with information that you may not wish to receive or that is not suitable for you. By using this analysis as well as additional information about you such as geo-demographic details and measures of affluence we can better understand the people who support us and therefore make appropriate requests for support. This analysis may also help us to build a picture of our supporter base and attract new, like-minded supporters to Refuge, allowing us to reach even more people experiencing domestic violence. For example we may check if people in your postcode area tend to read certain newspapers and then advertise in that publication.

Who is the information shared with?

When making an online donation you will be directed through to the site of our agent, SagePay, which administers donation transactions on our behalf. The site utilises a number of security features, including Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, for all transactions.  Information provided to SagePay will be processed only for the purposes of enabling the donation transaction to take place. SagePay also has its own privacy policy here.

Refuge will never sell your information to a third party. If we ever need to send data to a third party (for example to an agency carrying out telemarketing or a mailing house distributing mailings on our behalf) we will make sure the company we use has signed a data processing agreement with us.

If you have made a Gift Aid declaration, we will disclose the information you have provided as part of the declaration to HMRC for the purpose of reclaiming gift aid on your donation(s).

Refuge may analyse and disclose aggregate statistics about our site visitors, and donations in order to describe our services to prospective partners, other reputable third parties and for other lawful purposes, but these statistics will include no personally identifying information.

Refuge may disclose personal information if required to do so by law or if it believes in good faith that such action is required by law.

Security

Refuge places a great importance on the security of all personally identifiable information associated with individuals.  We have security measures in place to attempt to protect against the loss, misuse and alteration of personal data under our control (for example, our security and privacy policies are periodically reviewed and enhanced as necessary and only authorised personnel have access to personal information).  Whilst we cannot guarantee that loss, misuse or alteration of data will not occur, we use our best efforts to prevent this from occurring.

If you have given us the relevant permission to do so, we may send communications to you via email. Email is not a fully secure means of communications and whilst we do our utmost to keep our systems and communications protected we cannot guarantee this. If you prefer not to receive emails from us you are under no obligation to do so.

If we have purchased your data

On occasion we may purchase data from reputable third party providers. This is to allow us to attract more support for Refuge and spread awareness of our organisation and the vital work that we carry out. In line with the ‘Your information’ section below, you can always ask us where we got your data. We will only use data that complies with all current data protection regulations from reputable partners. We will ensure a data agreement is in place with the provider and only contact those who have explicitly opted in to receive contact from third parties.
