“Talking about my experience and working alongside Refuge has been really empowering for me, and I know it will be for others too.”

Bethany, who spoke to the media about her experiences

Refuge has led the campaign to raise public awareness and change social attitudes towards domestic violence and other violence against women and girls issues.

One important way Refuge does this is by facilitating interviews with former clients for both broadcast and print media journalists. Refuge works with women, of all ages and all backgrounds, who have endured many different forms of abuse. Some clients we work with have convicted their perpetrators and can speak openly to the media; others wish to share their stories but need to remain anonymous.  We only work with women who are safe and able to share their stories.

Out of hours, the communications team can be reached on 07970 894240. Covering domestic violence in your publication or programme can save lives.

“I would never have contacted Refuge before I heard about you. I read a story in a magazine about domestic abuse that referenced Refuge. It changed my life. It was such a revelation to read that I was not alone or crazy, or that it was not acceptable to be in that kind of situation. It kick-started a slow but steady campaign to leave my abusive partner and basically save myself and my son from a horrible future.”

If you are a survivor who would like to share your story with the media, please do get in touch. We will support you through every step of the process: we will talk to you about your safety; liaise with the journalist on your behalf; we never give your contact details away; we always ensure you can read the piece before it is published to check for accuracy.

If you do not feel comfortable speaking to journalists, there are still opportunities to support Refuge’s communications and campaigning work. Survivors have spoken at Refuge fundraising events, shared their stories with politicians and featured in Refuge’s marketing materials.

However you want to help, we would love to hear from you. Contact the press team on press@refuge.org.uk or 0207 395 7731.

“(A support worker) saw the change in me – she could see that I was empowered after I gave a speech that would help other women see the light at the end of the tunnel. I felt stronger and more confident – and very privileged to be a part of Refuge’s event. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for allowing me to participate.”
