The Cherie Rose – In aid of Refuge

Refuge’s patron Cherie Booth QC has chosen Refuge to receive a donation from every sale of a beautiful rose named in her honour.

Cherie with the roseCherie, leading human rights lawyer and wife of the former Prime Minister Tony Blair, has been patron of Refuge for three years and a trustee for more than a decade.  She is passionately committed to fighting for the rights of women and children experiencing domestic violence.

When Harkness Roses named a new breed of rose in her honour, she nominated Refuge as recipient of a donation from the sale of every plant, to help fund its life-saving and life-changing services for women and children who have experienced domestic violence.

Cherie first encountered the issue of domestic violence as a young barrister, representing victims seeking injunctions against violent partners.

Cherie said:

“I was 22 with little idea of the terrible things going on behind closed doors in homes across the country.  I was shocked to see women arrive at court, physically and emotionally shattered – beaten black and blue, their self-esteem destroyed by years of verbal and emotional abuse.

“Refuge can take real pride in the role it has played over the last 35 years in changing attitudes, in helping bring about this progress and in offering practical support for victims. But there’s no room for complacency when the figures show that one in four women will experience domestic violence sometime in their life. We know as well that too many women still feel ashamed that they are victims, feel trapped in their abusive relationships and don’t realise the help now available to them.

“As a Patron of Refuge, I am proud to add my own voice to those demanding we make clear that there can be no excuse for domestic violence.  Together, we can end the violence, the misery, the fear and the isolation that swallows up so many women.”

Sandra Horley CBE, Chief Executive of Refuge, said:

“We’re delighted that proceeds from this beautiful rose will be donated to Refuge.  Cherie has been a massive source of support and inspiration since she became a trustee more than 10 years ago.

“The money raised by the Cherie rose will help us continue and grow our vital services, reaching out to women and children experiencing domestic violence.”

The cherie roseAbout the rose

The rose is a perfect gift for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day or any other special occasion.

The flower itself is a perfumed dark red floribunda.  It is a breakthrough in rose breeding as, unlike most red roses, it is particularly resistant to problems like black spot and powdery mildew.  The mid-sized blooms area velvety red and open in a loose rosette form.  The foliage is rich and leathery and the scent is distinctively spicy.  The Cherie is a sturdy, easy-to-grow, stock rose that is ideal for general purpose planting, and great to cut for indoors.
