Don’t Ignore Domestic Violence Month – November 2005

Don’t Ignore Domestic Violence month

November 2005

Domestic violence kills more 19-44 year old women than anything else.  Refuge, national domestic violence charity, and everywoman, the leading resource provider for women in business, are asking the general public to take a stand against domestic violence by sending a text message* to show their support.  Not only will the charity benefit financially but supporters who text in will be entered into a prize draw to win one of nine fabulous prizes.

The prize draw heralds the launch of Don’t Ignore Domestic Violence month in November and also marks International Violence Against Women Day on 25th November.  Refuge and everywoman are working together to raise money and awareness of a crime which kills two women every week in England and Wales.

Sandra Horley, OBE, chief executive of Refuge, said: ‘For too long domestic violence has been a hidden crime in this country, excused and ignored.  Just five texts would mean that the Refuge team can give a child an hour’s worth of counselling – just imagine what we could do to support women and children if we received 500 texts.  Domestic violence is everybody’s responsibility – but only when we all stand up to the issue will we see enduring change.  Let’s hope that we can all make a big difference this November.’

Maxine Benson and Karen Gill, co-founders of everywoman, said: ‘Everywoman is committed to working with Refuge as we believe that no woman or child should have to live with violence or fear. Raising awareness and funding is crucial, so please send your £1.50 text to Refuge, and spread the word among your friends and family asking them to do the same.’

There are nine fantastic prizes up for grabs which include a pair of centre court Wimbledon tickets to see the men’s final, lunch at the River Café, a PS2, a tour of the Coronation Street set and a luxury spa weekend break at Bovey Castle in Devon.
