How can I arrange an event to raise funds for Refuge?
Organising your own event is a fantastic way of raising funds for Refuge and having fun at the same time. Almost anything you can dream up can be sponsored so the possibilities for raising money are endless. And with Refuge depending on donations to provide its services, you will be making a real difference to the lives of abused women and children.

How can I help Refuge?
Refuge depends on donations to provide its services for abused women and children. If you are able to make a donation of any kind, please visit our fundraising area on this website. There are many ways of donating or raising funds for Refuge, and you will be making a real difference to the lives of the women and children who depend on us.
If you are unable to make a donation but would like to give your time instead, there are opportunities to volunteer on the 24-hour National Domestic Violence Freephone Helpline. We also have a small number of volunteers who help us out in our fundraising department.

How can I volunteer on the Freephone 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline?
If you have some spare time, volunteering for Refuge is a great way of making a difference. We depend on other people's generosity to provide our services, and that generosity does not have to be financial. Making a commitment to volunteer for Refuge is a really valuable way of helping - and we're sure the experience will be rewarding for you too.
I want to volunteer - how can I help?
There are two areas where we are able to accept volunteers on the 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline, and as part of our fundraising team.
We do not use volunteers within our refuges, for reasons of confidentiality and the need to provide sensitive, discreet and professional support to vulnerable women and children. To find out more about volunteering for Refuge email volunteering@refuge.org.uk

When was Refuge set up?
In 1971 Refuge set up the first refuge in the world in Chiswick, London for abused women and children.

Why does Refuge only work with abused women and children, not men?
From the moment it opened the doors of the world's first safe house, Refuge has existed to provide support for abused women and children. That is one of our principal objectives and the basis on which we raise funds for our services.
We do not deny that men are abused too, although the vast majority of domestic violence is directed towards women. However, we do not provide any services for men and are unable to support them, although we do refer men to other services.
If you or someone you know is a man who is being abused, an organisation like Samaritans can provide support.
