Chief executive of Refuge, Sandra Horley CBE, said:

“For many, Valentine’s Day is a time to enjoy being with a partner.

“However thousands of women and children will be spending this Valentine’s Day, like every other day of the year, in fear and terror. Domestic violence is the biggest issue affecting women in this country. One woman in four will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and two women a week are killed by a current or former partner. These statistics are shocking.

“Refuge is urging anyone who is experiencing abuse today, or any day of the year, to reach out and access support. Remember, you are not alone – Refuge is here to support you.”
