Refuge patron Dame Helen Mirren calls on the public to Walk4 a world without domestic violence

Helen MThe award-winning and well-loved actor Dame Helen Mirren DBE is calling on the public to participate in a 10km walk to raise money for the domestic violence charity Refuge, of which she is patron.

Walk4 will see hundreds of people march 10km across Millennium Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge on Sunday 11 September, in poignant recognition of the one in four women who experience domestic violence at some time in their lives.

The event debuted last year and raised £85,000 for Refuge – vital funds that enable the charity to run its specialist services, which support 3,800 women and children escaping domestic violence on any given day.

One year later, Dame Helen Mirren DBE is joining Refuge to again urge women, men and children to take a stand against domestic violence by signing up to take part in Walk4 2016 – and encourage their friends, family and neighbours to do the same.

Dame Helen Mirren DBE, patron of Refuge, said:

“Refuge works tirelessly to support women and children who experience domestic violence. The work this amazing charity does, day in day out, saves and changes lives. That is why I’m backing Refuge’s 10km event, Walk4, which provides an opportunity for people to play their part in bringing domestic violence out of the shadows, whilst showing women who may be experiencing abuse that they are not alone.

“A march is an act of protest – on September 11, hundreds of women, children and men will show London and the rest of the country that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated. I am proud to be a patron of this remarkable charity, and I would urge you all to Walk4 Refuge and Walk4 the one in four women who experience domestic violence in their lifetimes.”
