Join Refuge’s call for a public inquiry and keep pressure on the Government

Maria Stubbings was murdered by her former partner Marc Chivers in December 2008. An inquest found that Maria’s killing was contributed to by a catalogue of failings by Essex Police.

These include the failure to undertake a risk assessment when Chivers was released from prison for assaulting Maria, failure of frontline officers to perform basic policing duties and failure to arrest Chivers on numerous occasions. Read more about the inquest’s damning findings here.

Maria’s story is truly shocking – but, sadly, it is not a one-off. Across the country, countless women and children are let down by the police and other state agencies. Refuge believes that this is unacceptable.  That’s why we are calling on the Government to open a public inquiry into the response of the police and other state agencies to victims of domestic violence.

This infographic shows why it is so important that we keep the pressure on the Government.
